Clean an Out!

Out With The Old ..
Broad Belts - It’s the age of the skinny! Broad belts ran its course, in my opinion. The skinny belt makes one’s waist look slimmer and makes for a more refined silhouette. Also, often times the broad belt is incorrectly worn and makes the outfit look sloppy and I daresay tacky!
Feather Earrings – It’s as simple as, I am over it! People completely abused this trend. They paired it with absolutely any and everything. Accessories are suppose to ADD to an outfit, and if it is not doing that, MINUS it!
Stripe Bodycon Skirt –Just about everyone owns a stripe bodycon skirt (navy blue or black), and I’m a little tired of it now. It is almost always worn with a mere tank top, when one can have so much more fun with it! I would like to see it being worn in different ways, such as combining it with another print, which is risky but when done right can look amazing, or by making use of the bold stripes by making it the key piece in a navy sailor themed outfit.
Animal Print Dresses – The animal print trend is one of my favorites and I expect it to be around for years to come. It is one of those timeless, classic closet pieces that is always trendy and always in style. However, I am VERY tired of animal print DRESSES. I would love to see the print being incorporated in outfits in different, more unconventional ways. Just about every item of fashion comes available in animal print, so there is a wide variety to choose from. I hope to see animal print being worn in more creative ways this year.
In With The New !
Pants – I would LOVE to see more pants this year – pants, not jeans. Pants made of materials other than denim. Fashion has been slowly taking on a Eurocentric appeal, which is a more refined style of dress. I have been seeing a lot of linen pants, and I expect to see this year’s trends continue to progress in that direction.

Layering – I absolutely love layering, but it is not an easy trend to perfect.  It can be quite challenging finding that perfect combination of colors and lengths that complete an outfit. It is an amazing way to stay warm and chic at the same time. Lately, I’ve been seeing more untraditional versions of layering. The possibilities are truly endless – you can have a lot of fun with this trend!

Colorblocking – This trend was introduced last year, and I really hope to see much more of it this year. I absolutely love the bold colors, but I would advise one to stick to three colors max to avoid being an eye sore. If you’re afraid of all the colors then you can tone down the outfit with neutral colors.

Androgynous Dressing – This is the trend that I am most excited about, and you will see a lot of it this year. Women have been flirting with men’s wardrobe all season, and it has finally peaked. The key is to maintain a level of femininity to an otherwise masculine outfit. To get your feet wet try a boyfriend blazer, tuxedo jacket, or bow tie.

HAREM PANTS? OFF THAT!
WIDE-LEGGED PANTS? ON IT!
Disclaimer: Before I even get into the topic at hand, I want to apologize for failing to commit to my weekly fashion posts promise! I swear, I am not a flake, but I have been absolutely overwhelmed with school, especially with exams right around the corner! I am so sorry and I feel absolutely horrible!
I want to begin by first saying that when the harem pants trend first surfaced, I was a major fan! I quickly realized that it would be one of those love/hate trends – no neutral feelings. Initially, I only liked it on others – a lot of celebrities rocked it so effortlessly.

Over a time, I started to wonder if I could pull it off and this curiosity encouraged me to shift outside of my comfort zone and venture further into the realms of fashion.

Above is a picture of my first attempt at the harem pant trend (left)! Unfortunately, I don’t have any individual pictures, because interestingly enough, I’m always the one behind the camera. I always regret it the next day when I have nothing to show for last night’s attire!

Now on to the next issue!
I am tired of the harem pant trend! I am completely over it! Possibly, because it is no longer unique – everyone is in it! Also, I am constantly seeing it so badly worn that I’m turned off! So, where I’m at right now is that I’m leaving the harem pant trend to those just catching up and moving on to something new!
So, what exactly have I moved on to? Can you keep a secret? Promise? Wide-legged pants!
Now, wide-legged pants is not for everyone, as are most trends. The trend first started resurfacing around January of this year, and as you can see it still is not well-represented on the streets. Personally, I like that. I like being the odd girl, wearing the odd item of clothing, and standing out – be it good or bad!

I don’t want to make this post too long, so we’re going to wrap up with couple tips on how to wear wide-legged pants, in my opinion of course:
  • With heels! Flats just don’t complete the look for me.
  • With a slim-fitting top to balance out the volume of the bottom half. A soft, flowy blouse can also work, but I would advise one to break up the look by wearing a waist-cinching belt.
  • You can also go completely 70s and wear it with a pair of platform shoes.

With love, Shonique D. Thomas.

ALEXIA PALMER:
JAMAICAN MODEL ON THE RISE

Last week I stumbled across an article about a Jamaican up and coming model, by the name of Alexia Palmer. She was discovered in “Pulse’s 2011 Caribbean Model Search,” and since then has made some impressive strides in the industry. She has been heavily scouted by all the major modeling agencies in New York City, and is now signed to Trump Management. Magazine editors are also taking notice, and at 17 years old, she has been featured in “Teen Vogue.” How dope is that?!

Since discovering Alexia, I started to wonder how many other Jamaican beauties do we have doing their thing in the fashion industry, and I was pleasantly surprised and also embarrassed to see that we have quite a fleet! Embarrassed, because I can’t believe that this missed me! Names such as: Nadine Willis, Nell Robinson, Jaunel McKenzie, Gaye McDonald, Sasha-Gaye Hunt, and now ALEXIA PALMER! Keep doing your thing ladies, so proud of y’all!

With Love, Shonique D. Thomas.

EVERYTHING THRIFTED: Vintage Fashion!
“It is easily overlooked that what is now called vintage was once brand new.”

This is the latest realm of fashion that I have been exploring lately. I live in Gainesville, Florida and it is extremely hard to find authentic vintage pieces here; therefore, I have to settle for vintage-inspired apparel.

What qualifies an item of clothing as vintage? The term vintage is used to describe clothing between 20 and 100 years old, which is clearly representative of the era in which it was produced.

Where can you find authentic vintage pieces? Thrift stores are your best bet! I know there’s a huge stigma associated with these stores, but you can honestly find some fabulous finds there. Also, your mom’s closet can be an amazing source, lol!

Examples of vintage-inspired clothing:
·       High-waist shorts/skirts
·       Wide-legged pants
·       Shoulder pads
·       Maxi clothing
·       Stripes/Plaid
·       Polk-a-dots
·       Crochet
·       Sheer
·       Lace

One of my favorite online vintage fashion bloggers is: http://msvintagevirgin.blogspot.com. She’s absolutely amazing. She has such a wide variety of vintage clothing in her closet!
